The definition of it #
Woke is sometimes misused and misrepresented in political statements by people thinking that it simply equals leftism. It actually doesn’t. Woke stands for leftism that is radicalized and in the process of becoming detached with reality. In this sense, woke - when left unchecked - will inevitably progress towards extreme leftism and forms of communism. To illustrate this, a few examples are given below.
Catcalling revenge in Utrecht #
In 2021, the mayor of Utrecht decided to join in a program that was supposed to do something about catcalling and women feeling unsafe. To this end, it was decided that a few women would stand in the city centre with a special mission: they were instructed to catcall and whistle to random male pedestrians. It was thought that this might just work to educate “men” how bad of an experience it is to be catcalled. This is a prime example of wokeness; it sounds like a feel-good idea on paper, but when looking more into it, several problematic issues arise. One of them is to assign close to half of the population as perpetrators. After all, even if you have not catcalled yourself, then you are still a perpetrator if you do not become an activist against it. Looking down on the practice alone is not enough, you either have to join the woke movement by introducing yet one more problem in an often already difficult life, or you simply become a perpetrator.
Defending communism #
This is another prime example of wokeism. Communism is often defended in more extreme left groups by claiming that the failed communist states that we have observed are actually not examples of communism, but rather states that have never stayed true to actual communism. But the approximately 70 million people lying in their graves in Ukraine, Cambodia, Russia and China know better than that. The leaders of those “fake” communist countries called themselves communist, were well read in communist literature and showed a great amount of communist viewpoints and policies.
Holodomor denial #
Woke was already a thing in the 1930s, the decade that the Ukrainian Holodomor took place, resulting in approximately 7.5 million deaths. French prime minister Édouard Herriot especially showed woke behaviour by claiming that there was no starvation at all, and that suspicions of starvation were lies made by the enemies of the USSR. He even called the Ukrainain SSR “like a garden in full bloom” at the same time that millions of Ukrainans starved in a targeted genocide.
Rotherham racism fear #
In the Rotherham scandal, hundreds of young girls got raped repeatedly. After a proper police investigation was performed, it came to light that many involved parents, local municipality employees and police agents were too afraid to become involved in this case due to a fear to be labeled as a racist. Case in point, almost all perpetrators were so called “British Asians”, but more specifically from a neighboring country of India. One can only guess what was the actual reasoning behind this fear, but regardless it is a prime example of how woke can cause great suffering if left unchecked.
